When a dentist recommends dentures to their patients, many will refer the patient to an oral surgeon. Our board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Bartlomiej Nierzwicki, accepts referrals for pre-prosthetic surgery. At Millennium Surgical, we prepare the mouth for dentures before the fitting and placement. Whether the patient is receiving a partial or complete denture, we provide minor oral surgical procedures to make wearing dentures more comfortable. To ensure the proper shape and size of the bone ridge, Dr. Nierzwicki can reshape and smooth out the bone, which makes wearing dentures less painful. Tooth extraction can also damage the underlying bone, and our surgeon can even out and smoothen sharp edges and remove excess bone. If you considering dentures, call our Chicago, IL office and request a consultation for the best possible care for your mouth and gums before dentures.

Reasons for Treatment

There may be a need for surgery to prep your mouth for dentures, which include:

  • Reshaping and smoothing of the jawbone
  • Excess bone and gum tissue removal
  • Exposure of impacted teeth
  • Reduction of the bone ridge
  • Bone ridge reduction

During the Procedure

Each procedure is uniquely different, and our oral and maxillofacial team will review your particular needs with you during your appointment. The appropriate diagnostic imaging and x-rays will be used during your consultation. The medical staff will thoroughly review each step prior to any surgical procedure.

Other Considerations

After surgery, there will be some pain associated with the surgical site. We recommend taking an over-the-counter pain medication or the prescription medication provided by the surgeon. If the pain continues to persist, please call and follow-up with your surgeon. Our staff will provide detailed instructions on how to care for the surgical site to promote healing and to minimize any complications.
